Outside the Box: a Diversity Retreat
Website: http://dms.tamu.edu/outsidethebox
In alignment with Vision 2020, the Student Officers for Diversity Retreat (SOFD Retreat) will take an organizational development in addition to professional competence approaches to multicultural education. According the to Zey, Luedke, and Murdock’s report “Strategic Policies Research Group: The Texas A&M University System” (1999), Aggie graduates are often regarded in the workplace as non-savvy in multicultural differences.
Our student leaders are entering the corporate world where it is crucial that they manage diversity issues. Major corporations depend on multicultural skills in decision making and promotion processes. We believe involvement in student organizations provide students opportunities to practice their organization management skills. To help them take an organizational approach to diversity, corporate representatives specializing in diversity initiatives will act as resources to student leaders. Corporate guests will share their experiences, stress the importance of multicultural competence in the workplace, and enlighten students of consequences for lacking the necessary skill set to be a productive and conscientious leader.
