Leadership Conference Opportunities

SBSLC. In 1989, innovative collegians at Texas A&M University hosted a forum by which African American students in the southwest could assemble to address the problems and concerns that affected the Black community. The Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference (SBSLC) is held each January, uniting hundreds of students and advisors, nationally renowned speakers, and a variety of corporations from throughout the entire country.

The conference presents a number of creative workshops that focus on related topics and develop strong leadership skills. SBSLC is dedicated to addressing and developing solutions to major issues as well as bringing a spirit of unity among students and leaders of all levels. In 1999, the Advanced Leadership Institute (ALI) was developed to provide seasoned student leaders with an in-depth leadership experience. In 2001, the Advanced Leadership Institute was renamed the Charles E. Williams II Advanced Leadership Institute.

LEAD. The Leadership Education for APIDA Development (LEAD) Conference is a student-led conference held every Spring and was created with the intention of strengthening the campus identity and development of Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American (APIDA) students on campus. Facilitated by the Asian Presidents’ Council (APC), the purpose of the conference is to support and advocate for the APIDA community through the following objectives:

  • An opportunity for APIDA students to come together to enhance their collegiate experience by fostering identity growth and leadership development.
  • To empower and unite APIDA students to create social change by bridging the identity and leadership gap often seen in the APIDA community.
  • Focus on helping students understand the importance of connecting their personal values (values-based leadership) to create societal change (social change model) while instilling confidence as an APIDA student leader.

LEAD is hosted in the Memorial Student Center at Texas A&M University each spring.  Registration includes dinner, lunch, t-shirt, and access to keynote speakers and workshops.  To register for the conference, please visit the website.
